Edwardian Chemise

Hello!! Happy Saturday, I hope you are having an amazing day so far. 


Following the project, today I will show how I made my Edwardian chemise. But what is a chemise? It is a very light dress that women wore under their clothes, it was made of cotton or linen and protected the outer garments from sweat. People have been wearing the chemise since medieval times.  

As time went by, women still wore chemises under the garments with lace, silk, etc. until the 20th century and showing the chemise was once a symbol of hygiene. 

In the Edwardian era, a woman could wear a chemise or a combination as you see this:

I made my chemise following the instruction from "Making Edwardian Costumes for Women" by Suzanne Rowland which is a really great book, if you're interesting to learn more about Edwardian garments I highly recommend this book. There's a  drawing of how the pattern should be, I took some measurements and deduced how my pattern should be. At first it seemed very small, so I decided increasing the width. 

 
 

Fabrics: you can use linen, cotton, cambric, it's up to you. I used this cambric, it's really soft and nice to work. 


1- I placed the pattern on the fabric and pinned to cut.

 
2- Then I pinned ont the shoulders to see if it was okay and it's was big, really big.

3-I gathered the front piece and pinned the sides to cut it, also marked around the arms to cut right. 

4- Then I decided to gather the back piece as well. 

 
 

How can I gather? if you're doing handsewing, do running stiches and push it back. 

                               On sewing machine do the stich in the biggest point and the gather. 




5- Sew on the shoulders.
6- Sew on the sides.
7- I did hemming stitches on the hem and around the arms.
8- If you want to put trims, lace, you can, but I decided to not.






Your chemise is done! 

It was super easy to make, I loved how it turned out. Can't wait to wear it asap!!!

Edwardian Gown

 Hello, friends! Hope you're having a great saturday! Today is the last post related to my birthday project, which was inspired by the Edwardian era, so today it is about the dress that is actually a skirt, blouse and belt. I bought the mold from blacksnailpatterns, which has very good patterns, I highly recommend it! At first I was going to buy pure silk crepe de chine but it was very expensive, so I decided to buy another type of crepe, ana crepe, I bought 7.5m. I decided not to put any ornaments on the clgarments, because the fabric is the most beautiful thing alone.  It's made of polyester but does not heat anything, remembering that if you can't buy expensive fabrics for your clothes, it is good that you wear cotton / linen underwear so that your body can breathe better and you feel more comfortable.
